"Stop Being a Generalist" ...and 5 Other Tips for Aspiring Marketers

Breaking into the sports industry as a marketer is all about finding your niche, gaining practical experience, and telling compelling stories. Here are some key strategies I've learned from my short career as a self-taught marketer navigating a career in sports.

Specialize To Standout

In the competitive world of sports, standing out means becoming an expert in something specific. You need to develop a specialty that can elevate you above the crowd and give you an edge. . Whether you master the art of writing copy that sells or crack the code of creating captivating social media content, make no mistake, nothing will help you advance your career quite like an elite skill.

Then, once you find “your thing”, build a strong brand around that expertise and tell your story every chance you get.

Learn Through Experience

The best way to learn is by doing. Real-world projects provide invaluable opportunities to refine your skills, understand different types of fans, and test a variety of strategies. You can start small project on your own or volunteer to assist smaller groups or teams in your community to build the marketing muscles you will need at the next level. Whatever you need to do to get your reps in - Do it! Embrace every challenge as a chance to grow and learn because you can never afford to stop growing or learning in this fast-paced industry.

Craft Your Story

During interviews and in your work, storytelling is everything. Being able to share compelling stories about your successes, challenges, and connections with fans can make a huge difference. When talking about your skills and experiences, focus on specific examples that showcase your ability to deliver results.

I call these “Tell me about a time” moments.

In an interview, hiring managers will often look at your resume and ask you to tell them about a time when you used a certain skill set or handled a specific type of challenge. Knowing that this quiz if prerequisite to employment in your target role, seek out situations to acquire those war stories.

Communication is Key

Effective communication is crucial in sports marketing. Whether you're working with teams, sponsors, or community partners, being able to explain complex ideas in a clear and engaging way is essential. Strong communication skills will not only help you convey your ideas effectively but also foster better collaboration with others in the industry.

If you want to become a great speaker, it helps to work on your writing.

They say writing is like holding a mirror up to your ideas because it forces you to look at them as they are. Practice articulating your ideas in the written word and you will naturally become a more clear communicator. After all, your ability to be a great marketer hinges on your capacity to make others think and feel. You can’t do that if your words miss their mark.

Master the Essentials

Beyond specialization, having a solid grasp of fundamental skills is essential in sports marketing. This includes content creation, digital advertising, community engagement, analytics, and understanding fan demographics. Continuously improving these skills will enable you to develop strategic and impactful campaigns that resonate with your audience.

For me, I spend a lot of time listening to my marketing peers inside and outside of sports.

Human nature is constant no matter what year it is or what offer you’re presenting, so never underestimate the insights you can glean from other brands who sell different products to different target audiences that you. If you strip away the superficial details and look at the concepts, you’ll uncover countless gems by analyzing what other brands are doing to stay top of mind.

Keep Growing

Success in sports, as in anything, requires continuous learning to stay on top of industry trends and best practices. Stay curious. Be proactive about investing in your knowledge through online courses and networking events. Read books and listen to podcasts. Follow the latest sports news. The more you learn, the better equipped you'll be to navigate the ever-evolving landscape of sports marketing.

Regardless of the role you have of the situation you’re in, each of these tips can pay dividends for you if you use them. Be intentional with your time and never become too big to do the little things. Do that long enough and the rest will take care of itself.
